The 'secret' to this passion for practicality goes back some 20 years .to 'The Results Report'
At the time twenty years ago, I was a busy direct marketing copywriter, and owner of a number of successful businesses (including a retail business), and a consultant to other small businesses. In my spare time, I had developed a ‘toolkit’ of practical examples on how to make more profit in any business. Clients of mine who saw it constantly bugged me to get a copy of it. So I turned it into a book.
It instantly became a bestseller. And it clearly impacted on people’s lives. Buyers of my book would regularly call me, full of excitement that they were now making serious profits with it. They’d send me examples of how they’d adapted my concepts and examples and turned them into profit. My files grew to bulging with success stories from these ‘ordinary businesspeople’ doing extraordinary things with their marketing.
What I absolutely loved most was these business people had become seriously marketing savvy. They realised marketing was not only for ‘creative’ people and ‘experts’. ANYONE could do it with the right advice and guidelines.
At that point, I had an urge to share these case studies with my whole database of book users and other business people. So I created a marketing newsletter … ‘The Results Report’ as it later became known.
Each month, I’d fill The Results Report with practical ‘before and after’ examples and simple language explanations, and with success checklists.
I explained logically why most ads fail, and showed the step-by-step changes that make them work. I featured promotional pieces that make phones ring hot. And examples of sales letters and direct mailings that produced big numbers of enquiries and orders. And I gave simple practical advice. Such as how to increase prices in the face of discounting, win more quotes, find more customers, sell more effectively, motivate staff members, attract and choose great people ...
The Results Report grew to the point where I had subscribers all over the world. That led to me presenting hundreds of seminars, workshops and bootcamps. Then to video and audio programs, to writing more books (like ‘Turning Yellow into GOLD’ – a manual on how to write effective Yellow Pages advertising), and articles for business magazines. They were heady days.
